How long can my dog hold pee?

It sounds like your house training still needs some work because a dog shouldn’t reach that age without understanding that he shouldn’t be soiling the nest. Does he go through the night okay or when left alone for several hours? He should definitely be able to hold it overnight by now, if not then further training is a matter of urgency. I’m not sure whether rubbing his nose in it is still socially acceptable behaviour but there needs to be some sort of aversion therapy to stop him being prepared to do that unless he simply can’t hold it any longer. How long he can hold it for is more to do with how old he is than how big he is as a breed. When we first got our Cocker spaniel puppy we read that the rule of thumb was about two hours for each month of his age, regardless of breed. I’m not sure at what point that calculation stops working (I’m sure a two-year old dog couldn’t tie a knot in it for 48 hours, for example) but we had very few overnight accidents by the time he was five months
