For a Syrian (non-dwarf) hamster, the length of gestation (pregnancy) averages 16 days. For dwarf hamsters, gestation is about 19 – 22 days. If the father is in the cage, and they are NOT dwarf hamsters, REMOVE THE FATHER IMMEDIATELY. Syrian (non-dwarf) hamsters are not supposed to live together as adults. It is particularly dangerous for a father to be in the cage with babies. If you allow this to happen, do not be surprised if the whole litter “disappears” one by one. Despite the fact that dwarf hamster fathers can help raise the babies, the risk of a second pregnancy almost right away is very high, so again, I recommend removing the father from the cage. Otherwise, the mother may have a second litter before the first litter is ready to be weaned, risking both her health and the lives of the new litter.
