Well, part of what you read was correctly stated in your question. The Sun will run out of hydrogen gas to fuse into helium gas, as it is now doing to generate all that radiation and light through a process known as nuclear fusion, in about 5 billion years. At that time it will begin fusing helium gas into other elements and when it does that it will expand four fold or possibly more (i.e. expand to 4X its present size). There will be “no explosion” killing off everyone. However, with the Sun’s expansion there will be an increase in the heating of the nearby planets and everything on them will be cooked – fried – roasted to a crisp. Through some process which I do not clearly understand, the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and possibly Mars (being very close to the Sun) will be absorbed into the Sun.
