Antibiotics fight bacteria not viruses; giving antibiotics in this instance is quite pointless, poor practise and clearly goes against the NICE guidelines against routine prescribing of antibiotics. Your symptoms are, as Dr Frank has said, classic asthmatic responses to viral infections. Antibiotics will make no difference at all to your symptom duration. The passage of time will sort the problem out. The reason you have started to feel better today is not due to antibiotics, but simply because your body is fighting the virus and you are starting to recover on your own accord. Just get some rest, push fluid intake and take paracetamol for any pain relief. Obviously I am not going to tell you to discontinue something your GP has prescribed, but if I were you, go back to your GP and ask him to justify his reasons for prescribing you with Augmentin- it might just kick his brain into gear.
