I’m not sure what info your fiance got but my husband just went to the county clerk’s office in our county in California, filled out the papers and received a certificate that needed to be mailed back to them when signed and a certificate to be signed and kept for our records right then and there. We went to the justice of the peace with the certificate, he performed the ceremony, we and he signed both of the certificates. He mailed in the legal one and gave us the other one. The one he gives you will take care of most business. Otherwise to get a certified copy of your official marriage license can take up to 2 weeks. But the copy you are given at your ceremony is legal and binding and proof of marriage.

Right away — I got my “colorful” one right away after the “i do” part. I called it colorful because it’s like a displayed kind of certificate. They called it a “gift from city hall” marriage certificate. However, it’s still as valied and certified as the other one. I used this ‘colorful one’ for all my documents while waiting for the other one to send home. The real small official one will come in the mail about 7 days later with after you mailed in the envelope with $12 check. You can also pick up the small official one in city hall as well the next day with the $12 check or cash. It does not take 60 days.
