How long has a movie version of Stardust been in the works?
Hollywood has had since 1998 when I sold the rights to Miramax. They ‘developed’ the project for two years, but they didn’t really develop it at all. When it was over, I was no closer to seeing Stardust being made into a film. I lost confidence in Hollywood after that. For the next five years, I basically turned down every offer I was given. I was approached by lots of different directors and stars, all of whom wanted to give me lots of money to go away. I decided to keep Stardust because I would rather it never be made into a film than be turned into a piece of garbage. Why did you agree on Matthew Vaughn to direct? We knew each other because he’d previously produced a short film that I directed entitled A Short Film About John Bolton. I liked him and more importantly I trusted him. We talked about Stardust when his wife was pregnant and she read Stardust and really liked it. Matthew read it and loved it too, but he was more interested in producing the film than he was in directing it
