Longboarding originated as "sidewalk surfing" in the United States (particularly California) in the 1950s. Longboarding was first developed by skateboarders who wanted to go faster and also get the feeling of surfing and snowboarding on hard surfaces. Your local surf shop is probably the best place to buy a longboard. The people there should know all about it and they could help you with choosing the right one to start out on.
