In my opinion a good time for every place is: 2 days for Milan 3-4 days for Venice (going from Milan to Venice you could make a short visit in Verona or Padua) On the way from Venice to Florence, I suggest half day in Ferrara: it is not a typical tourist destination, but it is a really charming, relaxing town. 5-6 days for Florence and Tuscany (you stay in Florence, and beyond Florence you make trips to Pisa and Siena, and if you want to other little towns like Lucca or San Gimignano) 5-6 days for Rome If you do like that, you don’t need really to going up the coast (you would have to do Rome-Genoa-Milan). In that journey the most beautiful thing to see is Pisa, and you can reach it in a day trip when you stay in Florence. And April is too cold to go to seaside. Instead you could take a low cost flight Rome-Milan (Ryanair relies Ciampino and Orio al Serio, Easyjet Fiumicino-Malpensa).
