The Hatbox Ghost had a very brief run in the Haunted Mansion — just two days. He was there for cast previews before the attraction opened and removed for opening day when it was determined the intended effect was not working. His head was supposed to fade away with each beat of his bride’s heart and rematerialize in his hatbox. However, it was quickly determined his head never really disappeared due to lighting and close proximity to the ride vehicles. Some guests claim they saw the Hatbox Ghost weeks after Haunted Mansion opened. Whether he was removed at the attraction opening or a couple weeks later, it is agreed the Hatbox Ghost’s run in Haunted Mansion was too short lived.
