How long will a groundwater pollution plume last before biodegradation removes all the pollutants?
The biodegradation of pollutants in groundwater requires that mixing processes bring together pollutants (electron donors) with oxidants (electron acceptors) in the presence of nutrients and bacteria. Usually the process is limited by the availability of oxidants. There is potential to develop an electron accounting scheme at the scale of the whole plume. The project is to develop a spreadsheet-style model which incorporates a range of physical and biochemical processes, and is capable of performing an Monte-Carlo uncertainty analysis. The model can be tested against a range of field data for a number of our research sites. The GPRG is a diverse but closely-knit research group with some 25 researchers working on a range of research projects. It offers an excellent environment in which to start a research career. The department ensures that the students obtain good research training, provides excellent facilities and has a friendly atmosphere. The GPRG provides a range of professional d
