How long will it be until we have cars that drive themselves (such as the ones in iRobot)?

I don’t know how long it will be but I guess one might be possible with magnetic “tracks” embedded in the road that the car could detect and laser or ultrsonic sensors to tell the car if it’s too close to another car and adjust the speed accordingly.
