You can’t use the “1 inch of fish per gallon” thing, it simply doesn’t work! So how long they get means little to nothing (plus some get 6-8 inches). Cichlids are pretty messy little guys, and very aggressive to boot. So territory, interaction with their own kind as well as others and waste out put must be taken into account. Some species need 1 male to several females or need to be housed alone (like blue johannie). Other become very aggressive with their own kind and others when breeding (convicts and jewels). And some are relatively peaceful with groups of their own kind (peacocks) while others are extremely aggressive with their own kind (blue acaci males). It really depends on the mix you choose. But a rough (very, very rough) guess-timate is 15-20. Best of Luck!
