More swine flu cases reported at AF Academy By Michael Hoffman – Staff writer Posted : Tuesday Jul 14, 2009 13:00:01 EDT More than 100 Air Force Academy basic cadet trainees are in isolation after being diagnosed with swine flu or experiencing flu-like symptoms, officials said. Over the weekend, 52 trainees received word they have the H1N1 virus, bringing the number of confirmed cases at the academy to 67, said John Van Winkle, an academy spokesman. Another 54 fell ill, coughing, running a fever and complaining of body aches. They’re awaiting test results to determine if they have the flu. Tests have been sent to the Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine Epidemiology Lab at Brooks City Air Base, Texas, where 15 swine flu cases were confirmed July 10. Test results usually are available in 24 hours. All ill trainees are being kept in a dormitory, away from their classmates; no one has been hospitalized, Van Winkle said. Five cadets have received treatment and are back with their units.

The number of cadets with confirmed cases of the swine flu at the Air Force Academy has increased to 67. The Gazette newspaper in Colorado Springs reported Monday that 121 freshmen with flu-like symptoms have been separated from the rest of the cadets. They were placed in a dormitory on the base near Colorado Springs late last week when they started showing symptoms. The “doolies,” members of the incoming freshman class, are among about 1,300 cadets who arrived recently for their first weeks of military training. A possible outbreak of swine flu ended a summer youth camp early at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, where 10 students and three staff members showed symptoms Sunday.
