How many animal cruelty prosecutions have been brought against Racing Victoria Ltd?
MS PENNICUIK — To ask the Minister for Industry and Trade (for the Minister for Agriculture): Have any investigations and prosecutions been brought against Racing Victoria, under section 9 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 whereby ‘a person who wounds, mutilates, tortures, overrides, overdrives, overworks, abuses, beats, worries, torments or terrifies an animal…commits an act of cruelty upon that animal and is guilty of an offence’, for deaths or injuries of horses in jumps racing events in Victoria since 2002 — (a) if so, how many; and (b) if not, why not. ANSWER (given 13 Ocober 2009): I am informed that: a) There have been five investigations by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in relation to jumps racing since 2002.
