How many dogs come in an average shelter each day?

Yes, new dogs come into pounds every day and because the pounds are overcrowded, once a dog has been in there for a few days the pounds have no option but to euthanize them to make room for the dogs coming in. Pounds do give owners the opportunity to collect their dogs and dogs are put up for adoption but due to irresponsible owners, back yard breeders and puppy mills there are too many dogs and not enough homes. The pounds and shelters don’t like having to euthanize dogs, it’s a rotten job but they have no option. The number of surrendered and abandoned dogs is just too great. If people spayed and neutered their dogs instead of breeding them it would go a long way towards solving the problem. Then we need people to stop buying puppies from pet stores and the puppy mill business would collapse. If that was to happen there would be very few dogs being killed in pounds.

It all depends on the size of the shelter. The local pound, which is a Kill Shelter, can only keep the dogs a certain number of days before they are killed. They only have so much room. Many No-Kill shelters will go to the pound save as many dogs as they can. A No-Kill shelter will house the dog until they are adopted. The number of dogs depends on the size of the shelter. The no-kill shelter that I rescued my dog from (www.animalhouseshelter.com) has room for about 100-200 dogs. They place about 100-200 dogs a month. It all depends on the size of the shelter and how many get adopted.

It all depends. It depends on what state, what city, etc. A rural area won’t have as many turn ins, while others such as in NYC or San Francisco will. Is it a kill shelter that you went to? That could explain where the other dogs went, although some of them may have been adopted. If it were a no-kill shelter, the dogs were adopted out or taken by a breed rescue if they had specific breeds available. They euthanize innocent animals because there just aren’t enough people adopting. We could be a no-kill nation if we would all give a little bit, but unfortunately that’s not reality right now. Spaying and neutering pets is of great importance, but what also makes a HUGE dent in the adopting world is backyard breeding and puppy milling. People are going for the designer mutts and pet stores because they see a cute puppy in the window and just HAVE to have it when they are ignoring the puppies in shelters waiting for a home that may never come because they decided to support the puppy mill i
