How many hospitalists are practicing today?
SHM conducted a census of hospitalists and hospital medicine groups in 2003 and were able to identify over 8000 hospitalists. This same survey identified over 1800 hospital medical groups. In a recent survey by SHM, it appears that the average hospital medical group has 7-8 hospitalists However, it is estimated that there are between 10,000-12,000 practicing hospitalists today, with the number expected to grow to 30,000 in the next decade.
