How many names are on the Memorial?
At the dedication in 1982, there were 57,939 names inscribed on the Memorial. As of Memorial Day, 2006, there are 58,253 names. These are names of military personnel who were wounded in Vietnam between 1957 and 1975 and ultimately died of their wounds. (1959 and 1975 are the years inscribed on The Wall. The first casualty on Panel 1 East, Line 1 dates from 1959. However, the name of a servicemember who died in 1957 was added after The Wall was dedicated.
