Since 1983 and up to February 15, 1999, I have operated on 96 children with the syndrome. There are roughly twice as many girls than boys in the group, and the average age at surgery has been a little more than 7 years of age, although patients have been as young as 4 months at the time of operation.

From January 1985 up to March 1, 2008 Dr. Smith and I have operated on 300 patients up to 21 years of age with the syndrome. There are roughly one-and-a-half as many girls than boys in the group, and the average age at surgery has been around 7 years of age, although patients have been as young as 4 months at the time of operation. Since 1985, all patients have been operated upon using the same surgical technique, “pial synangiosis,” with minor modifications over the years.
