How many people died in the flooding in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina?

Copy and paste from CNN. Katrina became third deadliest hurricane to strike the United States since 1900, directly or indirectly causing at least 1,336 deaths, including 1,090 in Louisiana. After briefly coming ashore in Florida, Katrina made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in Louisiana on August 29, 2005, with top winds estimated at 125 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center, Katrina’s massive storm surge overwhelmed the levees around New Orleans and flooded the city, causing most of the deaths there. The storm surge also was the likely cause of the majority of the 228 deaths in Mississippi, where three coastal counties were hit hard.
