How many people get killed by bears in Yellowstone?
The park was opened in 1872, since then, only 8 people have been killed by bears. So most years there are no deadly bear-related incidents. The last death occurred in 2015. Two happened in 2011, one in 1986, another in 1984, one in 1972, another in 1942, and the first one was in 1916. As for bear attacks in general -with no deaths involved-, the number is about 1 per year. The risk of being attacked in the backcountry is much higher than in the developed areas of the park.
Hi Alan. From 1980-2011, over 90 million people visited Yellowstone National Park and only 43 people were injured by bears in the park. As far as deaths, in the entire 142-year history of Yellowstone National Park, there have only been a reported eight deaths, most likely caused by grizzly bears. Doing the math, the chances of being injured by a bear are approximately 1 in 2.1 million.
