No one knows because while thousands of shipwrecks have been recorded, it is quite possible that an equal number have not. Shipwrecks from ancient times were seldom recorded as there was no maritime registry until very recent times. On an international basis, many countries have had many, many shipwrecks, but we would never hear about them because they happened in other lands, other languages, other times.
