How Many TV Versions Of Daphne Du Mauriers “Rebecca” Have Been Made?

0

There have been 3 versions so far of this classic 1938 novel, not counting the famous 1940 Hitchcock film, which starred Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, and some say has never been surpassed. Nevertheless, all the TV versions have attracted wide audiences. The first was made in 1947 by the BBC, starring a young Michael Hordern and Celia Johnson. In 1979 the BBC produced a remake, which was even more popular.. This time Jeremy Brett and Joanna David played the lead roles, with Anna Massey as the sinister housekeeper, Mrs Danvers. The last TV version to date was in 1997. This had a stellar cast including Charles Dance, Faye Dunaway, Geraldine James and Diana Rigg. Emilia Fox, daughter of Edward Fox and Joanna David, took the role that her mother had played in 1979. The new version departed from tradition in allowing a glimpse of the mysterious Rebecca to be seen. The novel has also had several stage adaptations.
