How many violin concertos did J.S.Bach write?
I have to concur with Ruehl. It was seeing this question which made me decide to occasionally dip back into Y!A. Ruehl is correct – we know Bach wrote quite a few violin concertos. Some will probably be lost to us forever but the ones he mentions have been painstakingly pieced back together from old fragments and the pieces which Bach arranged FROM the original violin concertos (such as the keyboard concerto in D minor BWV 1052). Other models of this process exist for scholars to work from: the keyboard arrangement of the violin concerto in E BWV 1042 (transposed down a tone as the keyboard concerto in D BWV 1054) and the violin concerto in A minor BWV 1041 (again transposed down a tone as the keyboard concerto in G minor BWV 1058), as well as the keyboard concerto in F BWV 1057, arranged from the fourth Brandenburg Concerto.
