How many will be received into the Catholic Church on Holy Saturday?
In 2004, based on a conservative estimate from the previous three years, 150,000 will join the church in dioceses across the United States. Based on averages from the past three years, the number is approximately 50 percent for baptisms and 50 percent for full communion. As of March 24, 2004, 19 percent of dioceses reported an increase in numbers celebrating the Rite of Election this year while another 17 percent reported 50 fewer than last year and 12 percent reported 150 fewer than last year. About 35 percent did not provide 2003 figures for comparison. The remainder of the dioceses, 17 percent, did not provide figures from 2003 or 2004.
