How many years does Davy Jones have to be at sea?
10 years at sea, one day on land. If he does his duty of rescuing souls properly he is free after 10 years, but since he failed, he grew tentacles and became part of the sea. Will must do this duty, and since he succeeded, he is free after the 10 years. (Hence he didn’t grow tentacles.) To be exact, he is free forever to be on land if his lover is there to see him on the one day. She must wait for him faithfully during the decade, safely guarding the heart. And also since Tia Dalma/Calypso was not there when Davy Jones came back after the years, he refused to do his duty and believed she had betrayed him and…well, yeah.
