Mountain Travel was founded in 1969 by Leo Le Bon, Allen Steck, and Barry Bishop. Mountain Travel’s first-ever trip was a trek to Nepal which took place in January of that year. In 1973 Richard Bangs and John Yost founded Sobek Expeditions. Sobek’s first commercial trip was on Ethiopia’s Omo River. In 1991, Mountain Travel and Sobek Expeditions combined operations.
