How many years of college for a teacher?

I am in the teacher prep program at Michigan State University for secondary education (middle school and high school). You are required to have a degree in the subject you wish to be certified for and you can have a teaching minor if you choose. Upon completion, you must do post-grad student teaching to get certified. This can range from 9 weeks to an academic year, depending on your university. If you are in an undergraduate prep program, that’s a 4 year program that includes teaching classes, plus the student teaching. If you already have a degree, outside of the teaching program and you want to become a teacher, the post-bachelor programs are usually two years and include teacher preparation courses and student teaching.
