How much does it cost to install HVAC ducts?

I hope you are asking this question before you’ve framed it in. I was asked to do heating bids on jobs so many times in this case. Really worked to the disadvantage of the homeowner. It usually meant that there was no clear path for ductwork. Both supply and return if it was needed. This increased the cost dramatically. And the possibility I could deliver the performance expected dropped considerably. It may cost anywhere form $500 to $3000. Big variation I know. It depends on two factors. 1) the material… how much and of what type, and 2) the labor… what has to be done to get the duct in place. This is AFTER you even consider if your current furnace has the capacity, BTU and CFM, to handle the addition. I recommend getting at least three bids. If the cost starts climbs above, say $1,500, or the performance isn’t there, ask for bids to install a unit heater in the space. For instance, Rinnai makes several models that are quiet and reliable.
