How much does Social Security pay towards the funeral?
SSI/Social Security does not pay any expenses directly to the funeral home for funeral expenses. A surviving spouse or divorced person that was married to the deceased for 10 years or more may be eligible for a ‘Spousal Death Benefit’ of $255, but that benefit is only payable directly to the surviving widow or widower once it has been applied for and they are deemed to be eligible to receive it.
