How Much Folic Acid Is Needed for Pregnancy?
Folic acid can prevent birth defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly (a defect that results in a portion of the brain or skull being underdeveloped or missing altogether). To help avoid these serious birth defects, according to the Iowa Registry for Congenital and Inherited Disorders, women should take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, before and during pregnancy.
