How much information can a bar code hold?

A bar code on a wristband can easily hold 10 to 12 characters using code 128 (a widely used linear bar code symbology). More information can be stored on a 2 dimensional matrix bar code symbology. Radio frequency identification (RFID) wristbands can hold up to 256 characters in the band's IC memory chip.
