How much is too much time taking folic acid?
We need folic acid! There is no time limit. You cannot overdose on low doses of folic acid. Like most water-soluble vitamins, excess intake of folic acid is excreted and not stored in the body. Your body absorbs what it needs and gets rid of the rest. Those who take high doses long term may get a little gassy but large doses of folic acid is not dangerous. I take 4.4mg of folic acid daily for an immune disorder I have (MTHFR) and will take it the rest of my life. That’s 200 times the amount of folic acid that is in a prenatal vitamin. I experience no side effects. You do need to start taking folic acid 3 months prior to concieving. I would keep taking it until you are finished having children if your doctor okays it. Good luck!
