How much pollution does an average freight train and an average freight truck?

0

A typical freight train consumes 6 litres of diesel per kilometre and a typical loaded freight truck gets about 3 kilometres per litre. Over 100 km the train would consume 600 litres of fuel and the truck 33 litres. The amount of pollution from the train would be approx 2000kg of CO2 and the truck would be about 100kg. Bear in mind that whilst the train uses 20 times as much fuel it carries several hundred times the amount of freight. Therefore, in terms of fuel consumption per ton of freight the train is significantly more efficient.
