How much was poll tax when it first started compared to council tax now?

It depends how many people live in your house. Poll tax was much fairer – why should someone who lives on their own, but has worked hard all their life to buy a nice house, pay more than someone who shares a house with, say, three other people, just because their house doesn’t cost as much. One person is going to use less public services, like hospitals, rubbish collection, roads etc. than four people, no matter how big their house is, so poll tax was, in my opinion, much fairer. But yeah, as to your question, it would really depend how many people live in your house. I would image it would probably be a bit cheaper, though poll tax probably would have risen as much as council tax has, in the last few years, if it was still in place.
