Make sure when laying the sod that it is not exposed to the sun any more than 30 minutes before you start to water it. The first watering should soak through the soil to a depth of 2-3 inches. Then, the sod should be watered once a day to re-wet the sod soil for about 2-3 weeks until the sod has rooted in. After that, water sod when it shows signs of stress.
