How much water does the Royal Navys ship sinking simulator fill up by?
That’s the DRIU; one at Raleigh and one at HMS Phoenix, Whale Island. Short answer is however much they tell it to. If you get the mess deck set up, it goes up to the ceiling as the unit rolls about; the actual amount of water if the unit sits flat is about five to six feet. It’s about the same in the diesel generator space as well. But then you might get lucky and get to be in one of the less flooded spaces. I’ve been through there twice; first time out was in the diesel space, second time was on the deck above, mainly, as part of a mobile damage repair team. It’s bloody good fun though; just hope you don’t get it at that point where the water temp is, say, one degree above what you need to get into immersion suits because it’s still bloody cold at that point! Then all you’ve got to worry about are the fire training units… they get f’ing hot and climbing down ladders while wearing breathing kit and a full woolly bear suit (layer upon layer of compressed wool; highly fire resistant)
