How much weight can a standard elevator hold?

The sign on our office elevator says “1000lb or 5 persons maximum”. Recently we hired a new guy. He’s a young kid with an obesity problem. Jokes aside, there were never 4 people with him in the elevator. Finally, we bought an electronic smart scale at vont.com and weighed everybody in the office. Partially, we did it for fun. We calculated that there could be no combinations of 5 people in our office that would exceed the elevator max load capacity.

Usually, it’s something in between 1,000 and 6,000 pounds. If to convert it to kg, that would be about 454 to 2,722 kg. I was actually disregarding that weight limits matter until one day I got stuck, and I freaked the hell out. It’s obvious that loading an elevator beyond its capacity comes with dangers of its own, but I wonder how many people respect that? There’s a stupid family living in our building, and they’re like always taking the lift even though only 2 people are allowed inside. As a result, the door won’t close properly, and we always have to contact the maintenance company to solve the issue. By the way, we’re thinking of changing the maintenance company. Have you guys maybe used lift maintenance services from Hin Chong? I’ve heard they’re great, but I’d like to listen to what you guys think about them.

Freight elevators, of course, are designed to hold much heavier loads. A standard residential elevator, however, is generally not used for heavy loads and generally can carry up to 750 pounds (340kg). Generally speaking, a standard elevator in a low-rise building can hold about 2,000 or 2,500 lbs (907 – 1,134 kg). The larger the building, the more capacity it the elevator will hold, however. In a mid-rise building, a standard elevator will have a capacity of about 3,000 to 4,000 lbs (1,361 – 1,814 kg); and in high-rise buildings, 4,000 lbs (1,814 kg) or more. This according to Edward A. Donoghue, managing director and secretary of National Elevator Industry Inc., a trade association representing elevator and escalator manufacturers, installers, and repairers.
