the northern plains of india but in geological term better say Indo-Gangetic -Bahmputra plains . In Tertiary period there was a sea there, Tethis , with extension to north and west . Due to tectonic plate movement ( becouse of convection currents and various other combined factors ) Indian lithospheric plate( read peninsular india-which is in existance along with its evolution ,from Archean) underthrusts the lighter Eurasian plate on the north .This shallow basin marine sediments began folding due to compressive forces acting from north and south.Evolution and upheaval of Himalaya began. The plain was the foredeep of the folded mountain,adjacent to the craton.Slopes make streams.Thus numerous streams took birth and flowed down the giant along with load of sediments.Sediments continued lying down on the uneven basement of foredeep .Orogeny continued till its third phase along with making Himalaya higher and higher.
