How often should a horse be wormed, sheath cleaned and vaccinated?teeth floated?
1. There is no “one-size-fits-all” vaccine schedule for horses. Besides age, vaccination recommendations depend on geographic location, type of facility where horse is kept, use of the horse and use of other horses at the same facility. There are core vaccinations that should be given to all horses in the US once a year (preferrably in the spring at least 2 weeks prior to the onset of mosquito season)–Eastern and Western Equine Encephalitis, West Nile Virus, Tetanus and Rabies. Besides those there are several different vaccines that are given on the basis of risk of exposure such as Influenza, Equine Herpes Virus, Potomac Horse Fever, Strangles, Equine Viral Ateritis, etc. These vaccines may be recommended 1-4 times a year depending on the type and brand of the vaccine and the risk factors involved in each situation.
