How often should X-rays be taken?

0

H ow often dental X-rays (radiographs) should be taken depends on the patient’s individual health needs. It is important to recognize that just as each patient is different from the next, so should the scheduling of X-ray exams be individualized for each patient. Your dentist will review your history, examine your mouth and then decide whether you need radiographs and what type. If you are a new patient, the dentist may recommend radiographs to determine the present status of the hidden areas of your mouth and to help analyze changes that may occur later.

The schedule for needing radiographs at recall visits varies according to your age, risk for disease and signs and symptoms. Recent films may be needed to detect new cavities, or to determine the status of gum disease or for evaluation of growth and development. Children may need X-rays more often than adults. This is because their teeth and jaws are still developing and because their teeth are more likely to be affected by tooth decay

If you are a new patient, if you have had a full set of x-rays taken within the past year, ask to have your x-rays transferred to your new dentist. If you have not had x-rays taken within a year, a full set of x-rays may be taken on your first visit. Depending on your general and oral health, you may only need x-rays once every year. Other people will require more frequent x-rays due to continued treatment, diet, oral hygiene, and/or health related issues. People with very high decay rates may need more frequent x-rays. The amount of radiation from dental x-rays is minimal especially with the latest high-speed film. Consult with your dentist or hygienist and together come up with an x-ray schedule that is right for you.

Since every child is unique, the need for dental X-ray films varies from child to child. We take films when a visual exam does not give the information needed and after a complete review of your child’s health. Children’s mouths grow and change rapidly and are more susceptible to tooth decay than adults are. Therefore, they often times need X-rays more often than adults do. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends X-ray examinations every six months for children with a high risk of tooth decay. Children with a low risk of tooth decay require X-rays less frequently. Generally, two or four bitewing X-rays are recommended approximately once per year for children to rule out cavities and detect anomalies of eruption. We also take panoramic X-ray films that allow us to see your child’s entire mouth and the position of their teeth. These are taken every three to five years.
