How old do you have to be to work in a day care?

It depends on the place, some states have laws restricting the age you have to be to work with children and then even if your legally old enough, say at 16, a particular daycare may not hire anyone until they are 18. One place my friend brought her kids to for awhile didn’t hire anyone under 22, they told my friend it had something to do with maturity and growth or something like that. I don’t know I guess a lot of parents feel safer leaving their kids in the care of someone in their 20s (or older) than with a teenager.

I would check with the day care that you are interested in because all are different and it all depends on what age group you will be working with or what you will be doing. They will answer any questions you have just call and ask for the general director of the day care center.

In West Virginia, I know you can be as young as 16. We also have programs through high school where you can get an early childhood education certificate and actually get a grade to be in a daycare working for one class period. As long as you are old enough for a work permit, I’m pretty sure you can work in one.
