How old does my apple tree have to be until it starts to grow apples?

The fruit of an apple tree grows on two year old wood. They won’t put out any blooms until they are at least 2. They typically don’t produce much until they are at least 4-5 years old. You should remove any apples that it may have the first year it is in the ground when you buy a tree, so that the tree can concentrate on getting it’s root system established. If you planted it from a seed, you may not see anything for several years. Certain varieties are not self fertile. These will need another variety of apple, or crabapple to pollinate. Red Delicious is one in particular. The Red Delicious is a hybrid. If you plant the seeds from one, you will not get a Red Delicious tree, but instead will get one of the parent trees that it was cross pollinated from. Usually a crabapple.
