How old is Emmerdale exactly?
Emmerdale is definately the same programme as Emmerdale Farm, just a shortened name. People’s have strange perceptions of the early days that it was all set on the farm and in the farmhouse kitchen, but it wasn’t although that’s where most of the action took place. As time went on more stories featured the village itself, so they decided that the title ‘FARM’ began to sound old fashioned and dated and dropped it in November 1989. And there wasn’t just the Sugdens either, although they did feature in more storylines than the other families, there was also other families in the early days – Merricks, Verneys, Tollys, Gimbels, Westrops, Longthorns, to name but a few. It’s not much different now really. Even in the early days when people called it a “sleepy soap”, there was murder, rape, adultery and divorce.
