Born in 1920, Lieutenant Gail Halvorsen was 28 when the Berlin Airlift began in 1948. Lt. Halvorsen belovedly became known as the “Candy Bomber” and the “Chocolate Flier” to Berlin youth as he parachuted candy bars from his plane during the airlift.
