How prevalent is malaria in Cambodia and Thailand?
There is no malaria in the towns and cities of Cambodia and Thailand. In Cambodia malaria is primarily still a major problem in the forested areas in the north and eastern provinces of the country. In the western provinces, malaria has been greatly reduced largely as a result of the intensive interventions of the Containment Project. In 2009 there were 279 deaths in Cambodia attributed to malaria and 70 in Thailand. Thailand has had a strong malaria programme for 60 years and has virtually eliminated malaria from the country apart from its border areas with Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia and Cambodia.
