How prominent is Communism in political systems outside of the US?
Answering this question requires a slight degree of oversimplification: there are nearly as many Communist parties as there are Communists, and most diverge from each other to some degree in matters of ideology. However, very broadly speaking, countries with a Communist presence can be divided into three major categories: those states with a one-party system where some form of the philosophy is in place, those in which Communist part(ies) are dynamic actors on the political scene, and those facing insurgencies by rebels under some sort of Communist banner. Whether or not these parties are on the rise depends largely on management, culture, country-based circumstance and whom you ask. Which countries currently function under a one-party system? Why have they stayed this way, how close to pure Marxist thought do these states run, and how well do they work?
