bottom line, there is some inherant risk with any sort of theraputic procedure. However, in general, ECT is very safe. ECT is used as a way of “resetting” the brain, as such, it is a series of small shocks, rather than one dangerous burst of voltage. It used to be quite dangerous when it was new, but after years of study and advanced electronic technology, it has become much safer. Plus, one of the inherant dangers of old school ECT is the thrashing of limbs. Now, paralytics are typically administered for ECT so that there is no danger of physical injury.
