How safe is Nationwide building society?

If you “Google” Nationwide Building Society you will see that they are in takeover talks – hardly the behaviour of a company in trouble don’t you agree?? If in trouble surely Nationwide would be closing a few branches, cutting jobs rather than still recruiting and not attempting to take over Derbyshire and Cheshire Building Societies….. Either your Mum has misheard (mine does it all the time) or has been given incorrect information. However, in the tradition of not keeping all of your eggs in one basket maybe it may be worthwhile if there is a lot of money in the account to put some elsewhere.. If you are an only child or the one who has taken all responsibility you should consider a joint account for some of the funds – obviously with her agreement.
