How significant were womens activities on the homefront in WW1?
I am afraid I have no knowledge of Australian women during WW1, but I imagine that, as in the USA, the UK, and elsewhere, women took over a lot of jobs that had previously been considered suitable only for men. In the UK, women went to work in farming, forestry, on the buses and railways, they drove vans and lorries, they worked in banks, and of course a great many worked in munitions. I imagine the same must have been true of Australia. Plus of course a great many women did volunteer work, like serving in canteens, rolling bandages, etc. And many went to work as volunteer nurses, VADs as they were known in the UK. I am sure there must have been a great many women volunteering for these sort of jobs in Australia as well.
