How the Amistads positions are recorded?

0

The system is based on AIS (Automatic Identification System) installed on Schooner Amistad. As from December 2004, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires all vessels over 299GT to carry an AIS transponder on board, which transmits their position, speed and course, among some other static information, such as vessels name, dimensions and voyage details. Amistad America recognizing safety benefits of the system installed it on Schooner Amistad which is smaller and is not obliged to carry AIS. Positions are automatically reported by the ship’s AIS transponder while under way, the transponder is usually switched off, while in a harbor – the system shows than only other vessels in the area. Unfortunately not all ports are participating in sharing the data on line. More info on what is AIS below the chart.
